FAQ:

Q. Which models does it fit?

A. It fits the MQGPS-5Hz, MQGPS-TraQr, and MQGPS-HiDef.  It does not fit the old MQGPS with the all-blue housing.  It does not apply to the MQ200, which has its own mag-mount GPS receiver.

Q. Is it waterproof?

A. It will shield the MQGPS from light rain.  If you want a truly waterproof solution, just put the MQGPS in a zip-top baggie before inserting it into the cover.  Or put duct tape around the perimeter.

Q. What are the overall dimensions?

A.  6" x 4" x 1.5" (L x W x H), including flange.  Weight is 1.8 oz.

Q. My car isn't made of steel.  What do I do?

A. Use duct tape to hold the flange to the roof.  Duct tape residue comes off cleanly with a mild paint-safe solvent.  Or epoxy a 6"x4" thin steel sheet to the roof and paint it.

Q. Can I still move it easily from car to car?

A. Yes.  Grab the cover with both hands, squeeze slightly, and roll the cover to pop it off the roof.

Q. How fast can I go with it?

A. The cover has been tested extensively at typical road racing speeds.  Still, the cover may not hold under all conditions.  For very high speed or unusual wind conditions, duct tape around the perimeter of the flange is cheap insurance.

Q. Why not make it out of carbon fiber?  It would look so cool!

A. We tested carbon fiber and found that it dramatically blocks satellite signals.  We also tested a carbon/Kevlar weave with similar results.

Q. Can I paint it?

A. The exterior shell is made of ABS plastic and can be painted.  Just don't use a metallic coating or it will interfere with the GPS signals.

Q. Will the magnets interfere with the MQGPS or other electronics?

A. They will not interfere with the operation of the MQGPS.  It's unlikely they would interfere with other electronics, including hard drives and flash memory cards, but some devices might be more sensitive than others, and it depends on how close they get, so we recommend keeping them separated.  Don't store the cover with your cassette tapes or floppy disks, don't put it in your pocket with your credit cards, and don't bring it near your TV screen or computer monitor.  Do not bring it near pacemakers or other medical equipment, and don't take chances with critically important electronic or magnetic devices.

Q. What kind of magnets are used?

A.  The magnets are the widely used "Neodymium" type and contain the elements Neodymium, Iron, and Boron.  They are plated with a coating containing Nickel and Copper for corrosion resistance.  They are lead-free and RoHS compliant.  They are permanently bonded to the cover and should not come off under normal usage.  Do not swallow or burn them.
