5 Hz (five samples per second) has proven to be fast enough for autocrossing. Assuming an average autcrossing speed of 35 MPH, that's about one sample every 10 feet, or every 4 paces as you walk the course. More detail is always nice, but given the small amount of time you have between runs, it's hard to gain much benefit from trying to analyze more data.

It's definitely fast enough for road racing, where transient maneuvers tend to happen more slowly than autocrossing.

At the drag strip, 5 Hz is enough to generate timeslips almost as accurate as optical timing systems.
